The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday slammed the BJP government for discrediting martyr Hemant Karkare, a day after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) stated that Karkare's investigation in to the 2008 Malegaon blasts case was "dubious". NIA also dropped the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (Mcoca) charges in the case and gave a clean chit to five accused, who were arrested following Karkare's investigations.

"Our faith in police has increased over the years because of the courage shown by its officers. Karkare could have sat in his office on 26/11 night but he went out to face the terrorists. He was a martyr. The NIA has been turned into the Narendra Investigative Agency. With this (new charge sheet), they crossed all limits. They did this to save their Hindutva saathis (fellows). We want to tell this to Narendra Modi and Ajit Doval that this is not happening and any discrediting of Karkare is not acceptable," said AAP spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon.

She further stated that since the beginning, there were hints that the accused would be saved. "Public prosecutor Rohini Salian had questioned them. Even special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal was not informed. He has stated that he will resign," said Menon.

The party spokesperson said they will be organise a rally and protest against NIA's charge sheet. "We take great pride in him (Karkare). Now it looks like unless the government changes, things will not change," said Ashutosh Sengar, co-incharge of Mumbai unit of AAP.

"They are trying to divide people on communal lines. That is not good for the country. The investigation is motivated. They dropped the Mcoca charges only so that the evidence against the accused does not stand," said Menon.
