Nepean Sea Road's newest patisserie, Sugar OverDose, takes the cake (and the macaron and the blondie and the truffle)
Amal Farooque has a thing for beautiful hands. As a little girl growing up in Dubai, when her mum took her to Café Gerard, she stared, fascinated by the hands of the Lebanese and French chefs working behind the counter. Her crush on celebrity chef Jamie Oliver stems from the fact that "he has the most amazing hands!" It makes sense; Farooque's nimble fingers whip up all sorts of decadent delicacies as the owner of Sugar OverDose (SOD).
Farooque's latest venture stands on Nepean Sea Road, where she shares space with Yogurtbay. Robin Chatterjee, owner of Yogurtbay, tells us, "Sugar OverDose has been our supplier for a long time for red velvet and brownie toppings, among other things."
Customers entering this cosy store melt into a sugary puddle when faced with counters heaped with colourful macarons, creamy Callebaut chocolate truffles, blondies, cake pops and even 1/4 kg cakes. "I was the first to bring cake pops and 1/4 kg cakes to Mumbai," Farooque asserts.
SOD's cakes and cupcakes are a burst of flavour. Worli resident Vidhi Jiwrajka has been ordering these desserts from SOD for over three years now. "Her (Farooque's) cupcakes are my favourite treat," she giggles. Jiwrajka's not the only one. Kunal Shah has been munching SOD's cakes in his Malabar Hill home, for over a year.
"I love playing with flavours, especially fruit flavours," says Farooque. And so, along with swirls of strawberry curd tarts and Nutella butterscotch cupcakes, SOD also serves up fresh flavours in confections like baked caramel custard tarts. Delicious, we say!
