7 swine flu cases within two weeks across Mumbai

The state government's public health department has reported around 17 citizens deaths in the state due to swine flu till the second week of February this year.

The public health department of BMC reports seven cases of swine flu across the city within two weeks. While earlier, more cases of swine flu were reported in other districts of Maharashtra, Mumbai's civic body's health department had reported zero cases this year.

The state government's public health department has reported around 17 citizens deaths in the state due to swine flu till the second week of February this year.

Speaking about the swine flu cases in Mumbai, Dr Padmaja Keskar, an executive health officer in BMC's public health department, said, "We have reported seven swine flu cases across the city. The treatment of all the patients is going on. Nobody is critical or on the ventilator."

Swine flu is caused by the H1N1 virus. Its symptoms include fever, cough, body ache, nasal secretions, headache, fatigue, loose motions, and weakness. High-risk group people including pregnant women, senior citizens, kidney ailment and others who have a little weak immune system are given heavy vaccination.

In Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital, a civic-run infectious diseases hospital, some of patients from outside Mumbai were admitted for swine flu treatment in this year.

Speaking about the precautionary measures to be taken forH1N1, Dr Harshad Limaye, Internal Medicine, Nanavati Hospital, said, "If the patient has flu-like symptoms he should be kept in isolation preferably in a separate room to avoid the spread of the virus. The patient must strictly avoid going to public places. People suffering from a chronic disease of lung, heart liver and kidney or elderly people above 65 years should vaccinate themselves against flu."
