Over 10,000 property tax defaulters in Navi Mumbai, civic body starts sealing

In the last two days, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) administration has sent notices to over 1700 units to pay property tax within 48 hours or face action. The civic administration has sealed properties of around 21 units on Friday for not paying property tax repeatedly. Some of them evaded tax in alleged nexus with civic official.
 
The civic administration has prepared a list of around 10006 units who have not paid property tax for long time their default amount ranges from Rs1 lakh to over Rs 1 crore.
 
Of the 10006 defaulters, around 1700 units were sent notices who have defaulted big amount. Umesh Bagh, deputy municipal commissioner (property tax) said, “Around 1717 properties have defaulted major amount and these were given 48 hours time to pay tax or face action.”
 
Last year, civic chief Tukaram Mundhe had suspended Prakash Kulkarni, deputy municipal commissioner (property tax) after finding administrative irregularities in tax collection. There after a through enquiry was conducted and found that tax were not collected from several establishments. And, then civic body prepared list of such defaulters and sent them notices.
 
Civic officials said that this will boost property tax recovery after sealing 21 properties on Friday, which have failed to pay tax repeatedly. Accordingly, 21 properties, owing property tax to the tune of 22.16 crore, were seized across the city.

A senior civic official informed that ward officers have been instructed to commence sealing of properties owing over Rs 1 crore as tax. In financial year, 2016-17, the civic administration has set the target of tax recovery of Rs 595 crore. And, these actions will make easy for the civic body to meet the target. Majority of the attached properties are commercial in nature, spread across the city including in MIDC area.
 
Of the 21 properties sealed, majority of them were real estate developers, various trusts including educational, housing societies among others. Bagh said, “These all were given December 31, 2016 time to pay their tax. Now, such practices will not be tolerated and action will be taken against such tax evaders.”
