Starting today, you don't have to worry about changing the phone number that you have been using for years or keep two numbers. National Mobile Number Portability (or NMNP) has finally been rolled out across India by the Telecom Regulatory Authority, thereby easing a nagging concern for people who have to shift cities.

Mobile Number Portability means that mobile phone users can now change their telecom network circle if they move to a new city. This means that you won't have to bear the brunt of roaming charges by the time you get around to getting a new number in a new city, neither will you have to give up a mobile number that you have been using for years.

Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are already on the NMNP bandwagon, and will offer the service starting July 3 i.e. today. More operators are expected to jump in soon enough. The service is applicable for all pre-paid and post-paid customers.

This move was initially protested by the the telocom companies as they would lose out a lot of money generated by existing customers buying new connections when they move cities.

Airtel has already announced a slew of offeres for people moving to new cities who will be availing the NMNP option. The mobile operator promises that number portability requests will be processed in 24 hours, and that its customers will have free incoming on roaming till their request is processed. Pre-paid airtel customers will also be allowed to carry the balance on their card forward, and post-paid customers will be allowed to carry forward their outstanding/ pending bill amount.

Ajai Puri, director – market operations of Airtel India said in a release, “Today, not only has mobile phone become an essential part of our lives, the mobile number has equally become an indispensable identification for each one of us. With our complete readiness to launch National Mobile Number Portability, we aim to empower customers enabling them to retain this identity as they move across anywhere in the country.”
