National Mobile Number Portability (NMNP) has been approved by the Telecom Regulators in India. This simply means that if you move to a new city, you will be able to retain your old mobile number.

NMNP will let people change their telecom network circle if they move to a new city. This will relieve mobile users of roaming charges that they invariably end up paying before they get a new number in a new city. People will also be spared of changing the mobile number they've been using from ages. So no more hassles of circulating your new number, anymore!

Airtel, Vodafone and Idea will offer the NMNP option to its customers from July 3. Airtel has already announced that all portability will be processed within 24 hours and until then, customers can enjoy free incoming and roaming on their current mobile numbers.

But nothing comes without conditions in this era. There are certain criteria that the Telecom Regulatory Authority says companies can use to reject the application of customers:

1. Unpaid pending bills: If you haven't paid your previous phone bills, then your application can be rejected by the telecom company. So, make sure you have no pending bills if you want to retain your already existing phone number.

2. Term with Telecom company: If you have been with the operator for less than 90 days, then your application is prone to be rejected.

3. Change in ownership or address: You application can also be rejected if your current phone number is undergoing a change in ownership or a change in address is in progress.

4. Phone number is sub-judice: In case the phone number which has been sought to be ported is in a case being handled by a Court, your application can be rejected.

5. Prohibition of porting: Your application to port can be rejected if your phone number's porting has been prohibited by a Court of Law.

6. Service Area: You can also face the brunt of rejection of your application if your telecom operator does not function in the new city or service area.

7. Universal Product Code does not match: If the Universal Product Code (UPC) which is mentioned in the porting request does not match, your application may get rejected.

8. The last reason that the Telecom Operators can put forth for rejecting your application for porting is when you have a contractual obligation that does not allow your number to be ported.
