Glitterati take pledge to back Joy of Giving week

An event to be celebrated all over India - The Joy of Giving Week - was launched in Ahmedabad on Monday. Actor Nandita Das, billiards maestro Geet Sethi and Gujarat University vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi were among those who were present at the AMA to support the event that will be held in the week of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary every year.

Renowned people from different walks of life have committed their support. Sachin Tenduldkar, Azim Premji, Rahul Dravid, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman are among those who have agreed to make specific contributions of time, money, skills and other resources for the unique initiative by GiveIndia.

Speaking on the occasion, director of GiveIndia, Venkat Krishnan, said, “We are really excited at the phenomenal response we have been getting to this idea. Volunteers from all over the country have planned various initiatives in their respective cities.”

Actor Nandita Das said, “Mahatma Gandhi had once said, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. I personally feel that it is a great opportunity for everyone to participate in a movement of giving that the whole nation can celebrate.” Billiards maestro Geet Sethi announced that he would auction a cue and donate the proceeds to a cause during the week.

JAM Magazine with support from the MTC will hold ‘Campus Joyfests’, targeting 3,000 colleges all over India. Dr Parimal Trivedi also announced Gujarat University’s support for the initiative. He expressed confidence in the social awareness of the youth of Gujarat and called on all the colleges of the university to participate in the initiative.

Award-winning NGO, Goonj, will embark on a mammoth clothes-collection drive across 25 cities all over India, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat. Yuva Unstoppable, an A’bad-based youth initiative will provide on-ground support to the events, while Volunteer Ahmedabad will encourage the youth to conceptualise and implement transformational ideas during the week.

Director of Blind People’s Association (BPA) Dr Bhushan Punani announced that BPA had mobilised an endowment of Rs50 lakh, the interest of which will be used for conducting free-of-cost surgeries at the NH Eye Hospital, Bareja, during the week every year.

BPA will also conduct free-of-cost corrective surgeries at the VG Orthopaedic Hospital and provide free-of-cost physiotherapy at its centres at Vastrapur, Bareja, Bhuj and Sumeru Paldi.

Darpana Academy is planning to do a series of  Unsuni plays in different parts of India during the week, promoting greater social understanding among the people.

Madhusudhan Agarwal, founder of MAM Movies announced the ‘I am the Change’ project that will get 101 filmmakers from all over the country to document ‘101 stories of giving and kindness’. Students, amateurs and professional filmmakers can participate in making these films.
