The Photographers’ Guild of India (PGI) recently hosted Exhibit A photographic exhibition of personal images created by some of India’s worthy commercial photographers at the Tao Art Gallery. The initiative has been conceptualised with the intention of showcasing photography as a ‘fine art form’. Thus the series represents the soul of the artist, driven purely by zeal and instinct and not by the rigid guidelines of commercial or advertising photography.

According to DNA the works of the three photographers, Avinash Gowariker, Vinay Mahidhar and Saish Kambli are the best of the lot.

Avinash Gowariker’s pictures show Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao and Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri in a cozy mood. “I don’t do fine art photography. I only specialise in fashion and film photography. Shah Rukh and Aamir are like friends to me. The picture qualifies for the exhibition because they were not shot for any commercial purpose. But both of them wanted a picture with Gauri and Kiran respectively to be put up in their homes,” says photographer Avinash Gowariker

Aamir and Kiran’s picture was shot at the beginning of last year at their Panchgani retreat. Shah Rukh and Gauri’s picture was shot last year. The couple has put it up on the walls of Mannat (Shah Rukh’s bungalow in Bandra).

Interestingly, the pictures look very candid and show a lot of natural chemistry between the couples. How did Avinash manage to capture it? “If I was shooting for a magazine cover or for a commercial purpose, I would not have got the chemistry so right. This is what I did on their demand in their own house without any studio lights. So they were posing but were at their natural best,” he remarks.

Vinay Mahidhar wanted to capture beauty in a way which is not traditional. “My concept was to negate the idea of beauty and capture it in an unorthodox way. The woman I have shot does not have a perfect figure or body but still when she is turning back, her curves look so beautiful,” he says.

Saish Kambli’s picture depicts the wild energy of rock music but in a very Indian way. He says, “I created a special set for this picture. I wanted to show a very desi element of music but also in a contemporary setting.”
