If the original paintings of famous artists are still beyond your reach, you can definitely buy a swanky looking art coffee- table book. There are many in the market and these provide images of the art works as well as some vital information. If the book is on a particular artist, then it provides a biography of the artist as well as his artistic journey.

While there are hordes of art coffee-table books available in the market, After Hrs puts out the best. One of the most avid art connoisseurs in the city, Harsh Goenka says, “I might be being a little selfish about saying this but my favourite art coffee-table book is the one on the Goenka collection. It is called Painted Visions. The book is a compilation of Indian miniature paintings from the Goenka family.”

Brilliant artist and an avid reader, Baiju Parthan is very fond of the book titled The Art Of Looking Sideways by Alan Fletcher. He says, “This book is an amazing compendium of anecdotes, images, quotations, titbits of knowledge and information, and graphic design elements presented in an engaging/quirky manner across 500  pages. A book with no beginning or end, open it on any page and you are drawn into its flow and content.” He adds, “I received it as a gift from my life partner, (Vidya Kamat) two or three years ago. I think she bought it for Rs2,000. And even today I flip through it every once in a while and still find it as fresh and engaging as when I first laid my hands on it.”

Kanchi Mehta of the gallery BMB swears by the book titled Anish Kapoor by David Anfam with essays by Johanna Burton and Richard Deacon and an interview by Donna De Salvo.

Delhi-based art curator Johnny ML says, “While I cannot find any ‘best’ amongst the coffee- table books on Indian contemporary art, however I would cite India Twenty:
Conversations with Contemporary Artists by Anupa Mehta. This book has some interesting conversations with artists. You may flip through the pages of this book to find some interesting thoughts on art by our beloved contemporaries.”
