With the festive season giving way to the wedding season and New Year celebrations, jewellers are having a field day, with zooming sales. Designer Queenie Singh, who tends to feel that buying jewellery is a somewhat expensive proposition nowadays, gives her forecast on the jewellery that will trend in the upcoming season: “I see the use of a variety of col ours in gold — rose, black, white and green gold coming into play in the immediate future. We haven’t seen too much of this in the past season. I also see the use of coloured diamonds. The pieces that will be used will be big and uncluttered,” she says.

Queenie who boasts of a long list of celebrity clients, opines that raw forms of precious stones will be much in vogue. “The uncut version of precious stones like rubies with a more opaque palate, will lend an exotic touch.” She adds that she also sees jewellery that is more design-oriented trending, as against jewellery where the focus is primarily on the stone.

Star jeweller, Farah Khan Ali seems to concur largely with Queenie’s forecast. “I see the rise of rose gold, which is got by mixing gold with an alloy of copper. I feel that the use of a lot of colour in jewellery will predominate with very unusual pieces in animal or floral motifs coming to the forefront. While the trend last season was on the bridal the upcoming new year should see pieces that are more unique, cocktail-party oriented, the kind of jewellery likely to be worn on an evening out.”

Designer Varuna D Jani has a slightly different take on the upcoming scenario. “There will be many more hoops and long diamond chains being worn with a lot of emphasis on coloured stones — coloured diamonds, rubies, emeralds etc. Jewellery will be more versatile, more modular with emphasis on the glamour quotient.” Varuna feels that while the last season emphasised bling, the upcoming season will see jewellery along along classic lines with a modern touch.
