Mostly artwork includes work on paper or canvas with different types of paints. But a true artist never lets restriction of medium bind him. He or she transcends every boundary to reach the elusive picture in mind. And that’s what artist Sukanta did.

“For many years, I have pursued painting, photography and other forms of artistic expression.
Presently, I am working in a relatively difficult and uncommon form of art form called Paper Collage”,he says. The artworks are created only by cut and paste of magazine papers, devoid of any brush work or paint. “I have experimented and worked in paper collage for the past nine to 10 years now,” he adds.

Papiers colles or paper collage is a very old technique and has been used effectively by many artists. This medium, not as popular as oil or water colour, has the versatility required for expression. Collage was first used by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque at the end of 1912. This plastic element, suited the Cubists, who believed in representing a subject based on its pictorial effect and not realism.

“In a papiers colles, coloured pieces from newspaper, magazine, etc, are cut and pasted systematically to create the paintings. In this, a specific portion of a printed, coloured picture is selected, cut and pasted on paper or canvas. In this process, it is only the colour of the paper which is of importance, the content of the picture is irrelevant,” he explains.

An engineer by profession, teacher by choice and colourist by nature, Mona says she paints because she feels elated and rejuvenated. “It keeps me grounded and appreciative of Mother Nature, it helps me focus on the real purpose of life — enjoy the journey,” he adds. The exhibition will be open to the public till November 25 at Nehru Centre.
