Plaid is a timeless classic and nothing can dent its season-less appeal and it's not hard to understand why designers across the board continue to reinterpret it season. Pre-Fall 19 presentations saw labels like Giorgio Armani, Monse, Proenza Schouler and Brock toying with the statement-making tartan. "One of the biggest takeaway is that there's no such thing as too much plaid. Plaid is an evergreen trend but season after season, there has always been a variation. Pre-Fall 2019’s plaid is definitely more colourful than the previous seasons. From the plaid pants to the checked blazer, this vintage inspired style can be worn to the office or dressed down to meet your street style needs," says designer Arpita Mehta.

Designer Swapna Anumolu of Mishru seconds that. "The plaid is being treated in so many fresh new ways. Using elements like asymmetry pattern, sheer layers, bows, and add on in terms of accessories like boots is definitely a foolproof way of making the classic tartan contemporary," says Swapna.

Pairing multiple patterns together for a mixed look or style a classic plaid blazer with a turtleneck and jeans could be great ways of styling. "One can also suit up entirely in a plaid skirt and blazer set for a classic statement look. If you love to wear dark colours, a burgundy plaid blazer brightens things up without overpowering the attire. The all plaid trend would surely make a statement," suggests Arpita.

A STABILISING FORCE

Plaid is the most remarkable and ubiquitous design that has never gone out of fashion. Its stabilizing force of structure gives a classical spin.

Designer Nikhil Thampi observes, "It’s becoming the suit of the season with sheer adaptability. For an edgier aesthetic side, one can opt for bright colours combing or accessorise it with a large black belt with a flash of plaid."

AMP UP THE STYLING

Plaid always seems to be in one’s wardrobe rotation. There's an uptick in checks and tartans lately. The traditional prints may not be ground breaking, but the styling should be. Designer Rhea Pillai Rastogi says, "While the print is nothing new, one can give a new appeal when worn with trainers, rainbow bright hues and many mixed prints. One can dress up a plaid mini with a trench coat and button-down blouse for a classy vibe or give a plaid pattern the bohemian treatment in a flowing silhouette adding a suede bag. A grey plaid blazer can also be styled in many ways by accessorising it, wearing it with neutral garments or adding it to a casual or dressed up outfit to get the most use of it."
