Pre-historic tools dating back to the Mesolithic era have been discovered at Leel village in Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The objects were noticed recently by a teacher of a middle school while trenches were being dug for construction of a girls’ hostel building at the village situated on the left of the Joram-Koloriang road at an altitude of 1050 metres.

Ajay Dug, a junior teacher of the school, brought his discovery to the notice of the school authorities who in turn informed the director of the state government's research department, Tage Tada.

Right now, the prehistoric tools are in safe custody of the school authorities, officials sources said today.

“The discovery of the tools has opened a new chapter in the research of pre-historic, mostly of the Mesolithic period, tools and archaeology in Arunachal Pradesh,'' Tada said.

Earlier Neolithic artifacts were discovered in the state, but after the discovery of the Mesolithic tools at Leel the department could extend its prehistoric research beyond Neolithic period, Tada observed.

“The discovery of Hoabinhian culture tools in the state firmly indicates that prehistoric people inhabited this region since the time of terminal Pliestocene and that Arunachal took active part in the migratory route of man from North to South and East to West,'' the director commented.

The Mesolithic stone artifact collected from the village can be classified as Sumatralith (Axe), pebble pick, pestle, constricted blade, sandstone, handled scraper, diorite and round scraper.

Most of the tools are made from river pebble which were available in nearby river streams and valleys. One of the tools discovered is made of sandstone while the rest are made of diorite variety of stones.

All the stone tools mentioned are agriculture implements.
