Author Jeffrey Archer has a weighty connection with India, which is why he loves to visit the country so often. Last week, the author was in Mumbai to promote his latest book Only Time Will Tell.
“People in India are warm and friendly. Also, they are heavy consumers of my books,” he smiles.
His latest book is the first of the five book series of the Clifton Chronicles, that captures the time from 1940 to 1950 (the beginning of the world war) and is a result of two years of researching by Archer.
“Coming up with the first book of the series had put me under tremendous pressure. It had the responsibility of building the audiences’ appetite for the next four books as well.” Archer spent a long time mulling over the title. “I think it’s a very old fashioned title but I still adhered to it because I thought it was perfect.”
Talking about his methodology, Archer says, “I wake up at 5.30 every morning and by 6 I’m at my desk. I’m a total workaholic.” Archer likes to maintain consistency when it comes to writing.
“Churning out one best-seller doesn’t mean you can sit back and relax…just like a Tendulkar wouldn’t have been a Tendulkar if he wouldn’t practice regularly.”
Most of his works have heavy influences from history. “It has a great impact on people and their perception of things. For instance, after the Taj bombing, you cannot walk into any hotel without being frisked by security.”
Archer, who wrote his first book at the age of 34, believes that age plays an important role in one’s style of writing, and asserts, “I’m not a writer, I’m a story-teller.” He suggests, “One shouldn’t start writing before 30. You need to gain experience in life, travel to different places, meet new people…even your writing style is more developed with age.”
