Many may not know this about Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri, but she is more than just a singer. She has turned into a cultural ambassador for India, performing beyond concerts, now delving into the therapeutic and healing aspects of music. Of course, she is also the first Carnatic musician to have been nominated for an Oscar.

In the digital age, teaching classical music has moved to Skype and YouTube. Ask the renowned singer about whether this will affect the quality of music and Bombay Jayashri states emphatically, “I believe music has to be taught ONLY in person, but yes for advanced students it may help to use technology.”

Dividing her time between Chennai, which is home, and travelling around India and the globe for her performances, Bombay Jayashri ensures that she has time for her ‘riyaaz’ come what may. She says, “Riyaaz is the most important to a musician’s life. It has to be consistent for several hours a day and throughout one’s life.”

The musician is known for her jugalbandis and she explains her passion for them, saying, “I learn a lot when I perform with other artistes and find new ways and new meanings in the music.”

In recent times, Bombay Jayashri has started to focus on the healing aspect of music to help special needs children. She launched a trust called Hitham which now works with Ability Foundation and teaches music to 300 school village kids in Manjakudi. She says, “Music is a healer. In my work with autistic kids in the past, over many years I can see a huge change in them.”

The Carnatic singer lost out to Adele at the 2013 Oscars. Ask her if she secretly harbours hopes of being nominated again and Bombay Jayashri says,“That I was able to represent India was a huge win - for me.”

Bombay Jayashri will be performing with danseuse Alarmel Valli in Delhi on September 20 'See the Music, hear the Dance' at the India Habitat Centre.
