How about playing god with the compositions of talented musicians across cities and national boundaries? Feeling empowered, eh? The British Council’s Mix the City app gives you the freedom to create your own music on your computer and share it with friends. At your service will be eminent instrumentalists and vocalists, each contributing two samples — played in loops — for you to mix and match. It also affords a peek into musical cultures of far-flung cities and regions like Hamburg, Moscow, The Balkhans, Tel Aviv, Istanbul and Tel Aviv.

Back home, you have a wide talent pool to choose from with each of the four metros contributing an impressive array of musicians. At a suburban cafe on Friday, the BCL released the Indian segment of the app featuring musicians from the Maximum City, the likes of which include eminent percussionists Sivamani and and Taufiq Qureshi, and jazz musician-keyboardist and singer Louis Banks. The Mumbai leg showcases 12 musicians — the format in sync with offerings from other international cities. It’s a mix of classical and contemporary sounds: sitarist Imran Khan from the Sikar gharana; the Chaush Brass Band from Vaijapur in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district that plays at marriages; flautist Rajeev Raja; Hindustani classical vocalist Nirali Karthik; and beat boxer Megha Bhogle.
Next in line are Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

Alan Gemmell, OBE Director India, British Council, and the brains behind this musical initiative, has a wider view on the impact of the app. “Mix the City Mumbai is a brilliant way to celebrate the UK-India relationship, connect young people in both countries and, inspire the next generation to build the relationship for the next 70 years. The Mumbai segment brings 12 incredible Indian musicians to phones and tablets across Britain and India and let's people create and share their own Mumbai music video!” he said.

This digital and cultural innovation, he feels, will ensure that a global audience sees, hears and shares the amazing Mumbai music scene and the beauty of the city — making everyone a little bit of a Mumbaikar on their mobile!
