A man's guide to Rom-Com

While romantic films – both comedies and drama – may be a category that is frowned upon by many males, I think that they are fun

Every night before going to bed, my wife and I spend at least an hour and a half watching television. Most times, it's a romantic comedy that helps us clear the clutter of the day before we get to bed. But more than that, the movies – at least the ones I watch completely (I pass out in the middle usually) – are fun and a 360 degree turn from the movies I watched as a kid.

While growing up, I spent most my time watching movies such as the Star Wars original Trilogy, the Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurassic Park and anything that had to do with action and adventure. While superhero movies hadn't made their mark, I had watched all four Superman films with Christopher Reeve and the Tim Burton Batman films. I went to an all-boys school and saying that you watched romantic movies or chick flicks, as they are called by many, meant that you were a girl or a 'gudva' -- a colloquial and derogatory term for an effeminate person.

Before marriage, I did watch movies such as Legally Blonde, You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Fortunately for me in college, there was a group of like-minded males who didn't see anything wrong in watching movies where the central characters were women. We formed a little group where we watched movies ranging from swashbucklers such as Pirates of the Caribbean to movies such as Coyote Ugly and Slap Her: She's French. True, there were a few of us who had crushes on the actresses, but then again, we could have just done what other guys did and saved their wallpapers. Fortunately, none of us did that and watched movies again.

Before I got married and my wife and I were dating, we saw some brilliant movies like 500 Days of Summer and some terrible ones like Twilight: Breaking Dawn. I still don't know why I saw the latter. I suppose that's what you do when you love someone, but I hadn't read any of the books nor seen the earlier films. I ended up annoying people in the auditorium by asking mundane questions about vampires and werewolves.

While romantic films – both comedies and drama – may be a category that is frowned upon by many males, I think that they are fun. They can have some wonderful stories or be totally mindless. And yes, I introduced my wife to the Meg Ryan-Hugh Jackman-starrer Kate and Leopold on Sunday night. And both of us agreed that the movie was awful and cheesy, but watchable just to laugh at the characters.

When I tell friends that I do watch romantic movies, even the female ones laugh and say that they would think I were gay if they didn't know that I was married. Now that's some food for thought.
