Tension boils in Barmer over the alleged attack on BJP MP Col Sonaram on Wednesday by some drunken youth. Sonaram has lodged an FIR naming two youth for the attack, but videos of the incident that have surfaced on social media do not correspond to the sequence of events being described by the MP.

Further BJP MLA Manvendra Singh has termed the incident as incorrect and threatened legal action if police does not take adequate action. Meanwhile, the matter has begun to escalate into a tussle between two communities; Jats and Rajputs and a caste mahapanchayat was called by the Jats and subsequently by the Rajputs on Thursday leading Barmer police to steep up its vigil.

The attack on BJP MP took place on Wednesday evening and he had lodged an FIR with the Barmer police. As per the FIR anti social elements had tried to overtake his vehicle on the highway and stopped it and attacked. They broke the glass of his car.

The incident took place on the road from Chohtan to Barmer. The message sent out from Jat MP camp projected the incident as an attack by Rajputs. But three videos of the incident have since surfaced that show two youth being caught by Sonaram’s staff and also show the MP’s PSO threatening them with his revolver. Incidentally the MP’s car is undamaged in the videos.

BJP MLA Manvendra Singh has question MP’s claims and termed the incident as one between law and hooliganism. Manvendra Singh said, “The matter is not of caste conflict. I have asked the police to get forensic check on the weapon and the car.”  Barmer SP Manish Agarwal said, “We have registered an FIR. Kishore who is a Jat and Guman Singh who is a Rajput have been held so there is no caste angle. Law and order is under control.”
