Failing to take appropriate measures to contain India’s biggest outbreak of Zika virus in the state capital Jaipur, now the state health department is trying to shift the onus for the spread of disease onto the people.

In a media sensitisation workshop organised by the department in which health minister Kalicharan Saraf, additional chief secretary (medical and health) Veenu Gupta, SMS Medical College principal Dr Sudhir Bhandari along with top officials of the health department were present, the health officials said that the people in the affected area are responsible for the spread of Zika virus to other areas.

When asked about counselling the positive cases and mosquito containing activities during the initial stage of the outbreak, the department officials did not have any answer.

It is worth mentioning here that Jaipur still continues to register Zika Virus positive cases, even after a month since the first laboratory-confirmed Zika positive case was reported in Shastri Nagar area.

On Monday five more people reported Zika positive and with these fresh cases, total number of Zika positive cases in the city has risen to 125. Though one official at SMS Medical College, on condition of anonymity, said that actual number of infected people is far more than the official figure. However, official claimed that out of these 105 patients have recovered completely.

DNA in its report on October 10, reported that the student from Rajput Hostel who tested Zika positive in SMS Medical College on September 27, was not counselled by any health official to restrict his movement and he continued to attend coaching classes. The department collected the blood samples from the hostel only in the third week. But by that time 25 students were infected with ZVD.

However, state health department is claiming that situation is under control and focus area now has been identified for intensive containing measures. “In these two wards, 23 and 81, intensified mosquito containing activities are being conducted. For these two wards, usual fogging fluid used for fogging has been changed to cyphenothrin instead of pyrethrin,” Naveen Jain, MD, National Health Mission told DNA.
