Thursday wasn't such a good day for Mahendra Singh Dhoni after all. Even though his team Rising Pune Supergiant managed to get the better of Mumbai Indians in a tense encounter at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, the former India captain won't be proud of his poor effort with the bat.
However, things got worse for the legendary Indian cricketer as he was also reprimanded by Match Referee Manu Nayyar for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during the match.
Even though the offence isn't established yet, Dhoni admitted the Level 1 offence (Article 2.1.1) for conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.
The reason for the Referee's decision could perhaps be an innocuous gesture by MSD during the game on Thursday. South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir trapped Kieron Pollard plumb in front of the wicket, but umpire S Ravi thought otherwise and decided to declare the West Indian not-out. Clearly peeved, Dhoni made the DRS referral gesture even though the technology isn't being used in the tournament. The replays, too, clearly showed that Pollard was out.
Here's what had happened:
Well, after being stripped off his captaincy and starting the season on a sour note, one wouldn't grudge Dhoni for not remembering IPL 10 fondly.
