Home minister P Chidambaram said Naga rebel group NSCN-IM was in peace negotiations with the government and he was looking forward to an honourable and just solution to the issue.
The government today said there could be "a grain of truth" in some reports about Northeast insurgent groups having links with China but asserted it was vigilant against foreign powers trying to wield influence anywhere in India.
Home minister P Chidambaram said Naga rebel group NSCN-IM was in peace negotiations with the government and he was looking forward to an honourable and just solution to the issue.
"From time-to-time there will be such reports. Perhaps may be a grain of truth in such reports. But I don't want to pay too much attention to these reports. I would like to go forward in the talks," he told reporters when asked about news of the Naga group having close ties with China.
Chidambaram said there have been several positive developments in the recent past including attempts by the Federation for Naga Reconciliation to bring all Naga groups together and return of NSCN-IM chairman Isak Chisi Swu to India.
"I think we should look into the positive developments over the past few months. While we will be vigilant, we must emphasise on positives and try to reach an honourable and just solution to the Naga issue," he said.
The home minister said the government is always vigilant against foreign powers wielding influence in any part of the country and takes every report seriously, though some are true, some are not or some reports even though true, are exaggerated.
Chidambaram also referred to the recent arrest of a few Chinese citizens when they tried to cross the Indo-Nepal border.
"Recently we arrested some Chinese citizens when they tried to enter India through India-Nepal border. All this happened in the last two weeks. So we are quite vigilant," he said.
Asked about the travel of a Chinese woman to Nagaland and meeting NSCN-IM leader Thuingaleng Muivah, the home minister said investigating agencies have found nothing illegal that she had done.
"There is no evidence except that she roamed around and took some pictures. I don't know whether she actually violated the law," he said.
