In an incident that lays bare the flaws of the so-called fool-proof security system of automatic teller machines (ATMs), some unidentified persons reportedly stole Rs5.47 lakh from State Bank of India's ATM located near Shyamal crossroads.

The crime is a reminder of a similar case related to Bank of Baroda, in which Rs19 lakh were stolen from the bank's different ATMs.

One Madha Parmar of SBI, residing in Bhaskar Flats near Mirambika crossroads, lodged a complaint with the Satellite police regarding the crime.

He stated that on November 18, 19 and 23, some unidentified persons stole Rs5.47 lakh from the bank's ATM located opposite Brindavan shopping complex near Shyamal crossroads. He stated in the complaint that the money was stolen by means of a password, which the thieves were aware of.

The police said that on all of the above three days, the burglary occurred at the time when the machine was being refilled.

They explained that in order to refill an ATM machine, one uses a password. Hence, someone who knows the process of refilling the machines could be involved in the crime, and the bank can help identify the culprits.

“It seems that either someone has cracked the password, or an insider has leaked information. We are investigating the case,” said Satellite police inspector Mahesh Gupta. He added that the bank is also inquiring into the case.

At the Naranpura police station, which had received a similar complaint regarding Bank of Baroda, a cash-in-transit service providing agency called G4S was duped of Rs19 lakh by five of its own employees, over a period of 12 months. However, sources said that SBI doesn't hire a private service agency to refill its ATMs, and the process is mainly carried out by its own people.

“In this case of fraud, cash has been stolen from the ATM machine. We have lodged a police complaint,” said P Nanda Kumaran, chief general manager (CGM) with the State Bank of India.
