Spurious liqour killed three more people in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. While two of the victims, Kamlesh Vaghela (20) and Jayanti Sitapura (37), were admitted to the VS hospital on Wednesday morning after complaining of dizziness and poor vision, the third, Noor Mohammad Pathan, had been admitted a few days back after being found unconscious at Cresent House at Gaekwad Haveli.

A number of police officials thronged the emergency ward of the hospital after they learnt that the two were admitted for consuming spurious liquor.

Both worked as ward boys at the hospital and are alleged to have consumed the liquor either in Sarangpur or Makarba in Sarkhej. “We have started investigation in the matter and are trying to locate the source of the spurious liquor,” a crime branch official at the hospital said.

Police officials are still maintaining that it is not another hooch tragedy. They believe it is the methyl alcohol which some people consumed a few days ago. “The two who died today could have received the same substance,” a source in the police said.

However, when DNA contacted Kamlesh’s brother it was found that he had consumed the spurious liquor. “Kamlesh was an alcoholic and consumes liquor every day. He even told me that he had consumed the liquor at Makarba in Sarkhej,” Bharat Vaghela, Kamlesh’s brother told DNA.

Bharat further said that his brother was brought to the hospital after he complained of poor vision and dizziness; he was admitted to the hospital at around 10 pm on Tuesday. “When Kamlesh was brought to the hospital on Tuesday evening, primary treatment gave some relief. We took him back home, but his condition got worse on Wednesday morning, so he was admitted again in the emergency ward,” said Bharat, the victim’s brother.

Although the police have raided several liquor dens in Makarba and in other parts of the city, they are refusing to acknowledge about any liquor dens operative in the area. Several police teams from different agencies like the local police, crime branch and Intelligence Bureau thronged the emergency ward of the VS Hospital after the news of another alleged hooch tragedy hit the city.

On the other hand, Jayanti’s wife Meena Sitapuria claimed that though the doctors have said that the death was caused by consumption spurious liquor, her husband had not touched liquor for over a fortnight. “He never left home except for bringing milk in the morning on Tuesday,” she claimed.

The samples of both the patients were sent to FSL, said Dr DS Chandana, resident medical officer at VS hospital.
