If Ahmedshah Badshah was alive today, he'd be sick in his gut looking at river Sabarmati, not in the least proud of what Amdavad has made of his legacy. The pollution the city has been dumping in the riverbed has come under severe criticism from the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) in its latest report released on Friday. The CAG has expressed concerns over pollution in the Sabarmati and other rivers, lakes and ground water in the state. The state government is boasting about having a dedicated department for the climate change and the chief minister, who has written a book showing 'convenient action' to tackle the issue of climate change. But it has been pointed out in the report that the state doesn't have any policy,

legislation, programmes to address water pollution.

The CAG has reviewed the water policy existing in states like Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. It has said, "Government of Gujarat had not formulated any policy based on the local conditions for prevention of pollution of rivers, lakes, and ground water. While treatment of industrial effluents before its discharge is compulsory, no programme had been introduced to prevent such pollution from agriculture."

The CAG in its scope of limitation for the audit has also made a remark that no information was provided by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation/Government on a vital component for the audit of the component of National Green Volunteers (Sabarmati River Conservation Project - SRCP).

The CAG had aimed to check the public participation programme to improve the aesthetics of the project area and to check the river bank erosion. The CAG could not review the SRCP by a three-tier committee due to non-availability of documents.

The report says, "... it could not be verified whether monitoring by State Steering Committee headed by Chief Minister/Secretary took place or whether Citizens' Monitoring Committee was ever formed."
