More than 20 anti-social elements said to be supporters of a political leader ransacked the toll tax plaza at Ramol on Thursday.

According to reports, they thrashed the tax collectors, looted tax money, and smashed the windows and the computer systems of the plaza which is located on the Sardar Patel ring road. All this happened in broad daylight. The Ramol police have registered a complaint of loot against unidentified persons.

According to police, at the toll tax plaza a caravan of four wheelers had lined up at 11 o'clock in the morning. The persons sitting inside the cars refused to pay the taxes and wanted to go way without being charged. Sources said after a vehicle moved forward after paying the tax, the caravan also tried to sneak away but because of the computerised barriers the first car of the caravan got hit by the barrier.

"They didn't listen to us afterwards, although it was not our fault. After that accident around two-dozen people got out of their cars and started breaking up the windows. They entered inside the booth and destroyed the entire computer systems. They beat us and kept saying that they are going to Gandhinagar to celebrate the swearing-in ceremony of their leader and how can they be charged with taxes,' said a worker.

According to senior police inspector Jhala, seven to eight unidentified persons looted the plaza of Rs22,641 and destruction of Rs50,000 worth property. When asked about the involved persons and their connection with a political leader, he expressed ignorance but said that the workers did mention during the inquiry that men involved in the incident were going to Gandhinagar were saying that they had to participate in swear-in ceremony.

The complaint has been filed by the manager of the toll plaza Paresh Chauhan. He said that one of the tax collectors has been beaten up severely. He also said that out of booth number 3 and 4 has been completely destroyed. The computer systems were badly affected and they had to collect taxes manually afterwards.
