Harilal Panchal, the grand old man who persistently served the humanity for over six decades, was an embodiment of nobleness and kindness, and his acts stood for social harmony and brotherhood.

His passing away has left a void in the field of social work in the city in particular and in the state in general.

Panchal was 87 when he breathed his last at 5:45 am on Thursday.  The end came at Samarpan Vidyapith, a premise of Sadvichar Parivar trust in Satellite. Panchal started social service at the young age of 18 and was active till he died.  He spearheaded his humanitarian work through Sadvichar Parivar trust he founded in 1949. He remained at the forefront of the trust’s work for past six decades.

The major area of his work was to provide food and medicine to poor patients at government hospitals. There was hardly any poor patient who did not know about him and his work.

Thanks to his support, many poor people could get new lease of life at hospitals.

Another area of his work was to stand by the family members of those who died. He helped the kin of the deceased to do the last rites (asthi visarjan) in the Ganga or Narmada.

He introduced the idea of tying of rakhi by women to jail inmates. This has now become a tradition in all jails in the state. The motive behind the idea was to extend sympathy and give strength to the prisoners.

Panchal also promoted the acts of blood, eye, organ and body donations to help ailing people. He encouraged people to go for mass marriages to avoid unnecessary expenses. He also encouraged people to organise blood donation camps at mass marriage venues so that guests could donate blood as gift to couples.

Remembering his kindness towards people, KP Singh, a trustee of Sadvichar Parivar, says Harilal’s magnanimity knew no bounds.
“We have a volunteer whose husband was killed by a man. Harilal convinced the lady to forgive the killer of her husband. The volunteer then tied rakhi to the person as an act of her forgiveness,’’ he said.

Bhupendra Banker, another trustee, said Harilal was an outstanding example of humanity. “The trust helped victims of natural calamities like earthquake, flood and tsunami,” Banker said.
