Scores of students, who sought admission in MBA and MCA courses in Gujarat Technological University (GTU) but were let down, thronged the varsity on Tuesday, alleging that they were excluded from the merit list because of a mistake on part of the university officials. However, a GTU official said that the reason for this was the misleading information students provided while filing their forms online.

Names of around 500 students from across the state have been left out in the merit list. A source confirmed that the reason for this fiasco was the wrong choice students made while filing their admission forms.

"We had clearly mentioned in the forms that students will have to file an application for both regular and evening courses separately. However, around 300 students filled up only one form marking only one option, said GTU registrar Bhuptani.

According to Bhuptani, the authorities have plans to give all these students one more chance. He said that those left out because of the error will have one last opportunity to get admission in regular courses. However, the option to seek admission in the evening course will no longer be available to them.

Mukesh Makwana, father of Slagha Makwana whose name was also excluded from the merit list, said that he and his daughter were completely ignorant about the problem. He also said that despite several calls to the GTU officials, he didn't get any response from the officials.

Another student Deepak Shah said that he was completely clueless about the mistake he might have made and even if he did, the authorities should have guided students.
GTU started the online admission system from this year. Officials said that there are some defaults in the system which will be remedied by next year.
