An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on Monday suffered a heart attack and died in Shahibaug police station minutes after he caught two alleged chain snatchers and brought them to the police station.

Rajendrasinh Girivarsinh, the deceased ASI, suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday evening, roughly five minutes after he brought Munal Batunge, 19, alias Jadio and Akshay Gagdekar, 18, to Shahibaug police station. Both the youths were caught by the public when they tried to run away after snatching the chain of a woman, said Shahibaug police on Tuesday.

The crowd in Navratna society on Ghoda Camp Road, where the woman, identified as Sangeeta Patel, lived, was beating up the two culprits, both residents of Kubernagar, when Rajendrasinh reached the spot and took them into custody. He brought them to the police station in a van.

The accused tried to speed away on their motorbike after snatching Patel's chain, but she shouted for help. The bike of the accused slipped and the public caught them, police  said.
Police officials and constables at Shahibaug police station were shocked and saddened by the death.
