Maoists posing as CRPF personnel today shot dead six villagers and abducted as many others in Bihar's Munger district, police said.

Around 20 Maoists in CRPF uniform armed with AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons stormed the village - about 200 km from Patna - at around 5:00 am and opened fire at the villagers, killing six of them, ADGP (Headquarters) Rajbardhan Sharma said.

The rebels came in two jeeps, which they parked one-and-a half kilometre away before trekking to Kareili village, police said, adding that the extremists also took away six villagers with them.

However, the villagers claimed the Maoists abducted 10 people and said the attack was in retaliation to the arrest of their spokesman Avinash from Munger last week.

The Maoists suspected that the villagers had given the whereabouts of Avinash which led to his arrest, they said.
