Availability of power in the state will not be a concern in about three years from now. Speaking at a seminar, S Jagadeesan, principal secretary, energy and petrochemicals department, Gujarat said that by the end of 2012, the state of Gujarat will have 830 MW of surplus power as installed capacity is expected to be 19259 MW.

Confederation of Indian Industry's three days energy seminar 'India Energy Conclave 2009' and Energy Expo 2009 began on Friday, which witnessed the players from the power sectors discussing challenges and opportunities in the energy sector.

S Jagadeesan said that there are also proposals to invest in renewable energy and wind energy shall be the priority in which 10,000 MW projects are proposed of which 5% have been achieved.

Sudhir Trehan, chairman, CII India Energy Conclave & Energy Expo 2009 and Managing Director, Crompton Greaves Ltd. emphasised on the need for sustainable growth taking care of the environment. In the coming five years, India is to witness large energy investment both in private and public sector.

Nitin Shukla, chief executive officer, Shell Hazira Gas, stressed on the need of intra-state grids that are required for equal power distribution across the nation.

Naushad Forbes, chairman, CII Western Region and director Forbes Marshall, recommended generating more power with gas and bio mass, investing in renewable energy like solar and wind and improving efficiency in transmission and distribution of power.

CII- AT Kearney report on "Sustaining Growth - Future of Indian Power Sector" was also released which presented an insight on the changing outlook for the power sector. It also highlights the change in market dynamics in terms of demand-supply, regulations and operational challenges.

Speaking on the changing dynamics of Indian power sector Kaustav Mukherjee, partner and vice president, AT Kearney Ltd, said that Indian power market is evolving rapidly from an 'opening' market phase to a 'developing' phase, and with several large investments announced by public and private sector players coupled with an expected growth in demand at a steady 7.5% - 8% till 2017.

Pranav Adani, chairman CII Gujarat State Council and managing director, Adani Willmar, talked about the recognition and acceptance of global warning where conventional sources of energy have to be re-looked. Energy self sufficiency has to be a major driver for exploring new and renewable energy sources.
