An analysis of the poor show by the first semester students of diploma engineering of polytechnic colleges affiliated to Gujarat Technological University has brought to light some of the malpractices by colleges, said vice-chancellor of GTU Dr Akshai Aggarwal on Thursday.

Aggarwal said that they have received complaints from different institutes that the number of academic sessions is not conducted as per stipulated norms.

“Every college has to complete an academic session of 90 days per semester. It is mandatory for students to attend 75% lectures. But colleges are not adhering to these norms and they complete their syllabus of 90 days within 40 to 45 days. Students do not attend classes. In such a scenario, how do you expect good results?” he asked.

He further said that majority of students have failed in mathematics and to check if the paper was tough, the varsity received feedback from three subject experts. “Opinions came that questions of only 8 marks were difficult and the remaining 62 marks were easy. If students fail in such huge numbers despite the paper being easy, there is something wrong,” he added.

Aggarwal said that the varsity is in the process of identifying colleges that do not have requisite faculties and infrastructure to take classes. They also want to start a process to ease mathematics phobia from students’ mind.

“To begin with, we will train teachers in improving their math teaching skills. We will conduct workshops in month of June and July to brush teacher’s skills. We also aim to have faculty who can think out-of-the-box and teach the subject innovatively and make it interesting,” he said.
