Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu has demanded that the government of India take stringent action against those responsible for various omissions and commissions in the aftermath of the ghastly Bhopal gas tragedy and ensure proper justice to the victims.

In a statement here today, Chandrababu lashed out that the Congress party which was in power both at the Centre and in Madhya Pradesh at the time, mortgaged the country’s interests by succumbing to "external pressures" and enabled the Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson have a safe passage out of India.

"The Congress governments at the Centre and in Madhya Pradesh, when the tragedy occurred in 1986, grossly betrayed
the gas victims. They have done grave injustice to the gas tragedy victims not only by letting Anderson flee the country but also by settling for a meagre compensation of $ 45 crore as against $ 200 crore," Chandrababu alleged.

"That those responsible for the horrific tragedy got away with a minor punishment of two years jail and Rs 25,000 fine, which only exposed the failure of the Congress governments in pursuing the case strongly, he pointed out.

Also, the Congress leaders’ involvement in the whole affair became clear with its official spokesman Abhishek Singhvi appearing as the standing counsel for Dow Chemicals that purchased Union Carbide, the TDP chief added.

"Instead of ensuring proper justice to the gas tragedy victims, the Congress itself was indulging in a blame game. It should at least see that the victims got due compensation," Chandrababu demanded.
