Students planning to enrol themselves in Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University's MBA programme in technology management will have to work harder now.

Reason: CEPT will admit students through the common admission test (CAT) scheduled in October for the academic year beginning 2012-13, said officials at the institute.

After clearing CAT, students will also have to clear the technology awareness test, an exam organised by Cept, apart from the usual group discussion and personal interview rounds. The change was made after the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) notification made it mandatory to admit students in a business school through CAT.

Cept programme head, Prof Harini Mittal, emphasised that there is always an effort to recruit better quality students. "Recruiting students through CAT will also broad-base the criteria for the course. Moreover, as students from across the country take up CAT, the batch will also have a cosmopolitan crowd. Currently, we don't have that," she said.

Prof Mittal also believes that admitting students through CAT will widen choice for the institute. "We want students with knowledge of technology as the course is on technology management. Hence, students will have to take up our internal test - the technology awareness test," she said.

The management course is three years old and offers interdisciplinary programmes in emerging technological areas.

They include energy and environment management, urban management, infrastructure management, real estate management, telecommunications management, intellectual property management, technology entrepreneurship and to specialise in developing management pedagogy for these disciplines.

Despite Cept having the permission to admit 60 students in a batch, the current capacity of a batch is 35 for the MBA in technology management.
