In a reaction to Union home minister P Chidambaram's statement that the Centre can extend any help to the cops being allegedly victimised by the state government, provided they asked for it, spokesperson for Gujarat government Jay Narayan Vyas said that the home minister has insulted the constitution.

Vyas also accused Chidambaram of violating the provisions of the central government.

In an official statement, Vyas said that the Centre should act as the elder brother. But instead, it has been motivating acts that give rise to anarchy and revolt in the state. "Chidambaram is clearly saying that if you want to revolt against the state government you go ahead, we are with you," he said. In his reaction to the charge sheet served to IPS officer Rahul Sharma, Vyas said that the government is acting according to rules and regulations.

Mukul Sinha, advocate for Sharma, said they have so far not decided to approach any forum in this connection. "We are going through all the documents and will react accordingly," he said.
Similarly, retired Director General of Police, RB Sreekumar said that Sharma's chargesheet clearly gives a message that the government will not put up with any officer who wants to speak the truth about post Godhra riots.

Sanjiv Bhatt, another IPS officer who has gone against the state government and was recently suspended said: "This shows that the government wants to prevent the cops from stating the truth. I had mentioned the same thing in my affidavit before the Supreme Court, in which, I stated that the government wants to ensure that no cop reveals the truth about riots," Bhatt said.

Responding to Chidambaram's statement that the Centre can step in if approached by the concerned officers, he said, "Appropriate action will be taken at the right time. We will do whatever is necessary to fight this injustice. We are servants of the Union of India and have been deputed to state for our services."

President of Gujarat Congress, Arjun Modhwadia cast aspersions on the inexplicable actions of the state government in suspending one officer and chargesheeting another in a week.

"Modi is petrified of a whole hoard of corruption charges being leveled against him. He desperately needs to divert media attention from his corruptions and scams to victimisation of officials. This he thinks is a mere case of bureaucrat vs government," Modhwadia said. Congress has brought out an elaborate list of corruption charges against Modi. Several cases are going on in the courts regarding transgression by different government departments causing huge losses to the exchequer.
