The CBI today arrested Income Tax (I-T) assistant commissioner Anjali Bambole, two days after the arrest of I-T additional commissioner Sumitra Banerjee and her husband Subratho for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs1.50 crore from a builder.

According to the CBI's Anti Corruption Wing, Sumitra and her assistant Anjali had on March 24 examined the documents of a builder and conducted survey of his sites.

"Sumitra told the builder that tax liability of his firm would be Rs25 crore. She gave an offer to the builder that the tax liability could be brought down to Rs2 crore if he pays a bribe of Rs1.50 crore to her," CBI Joint Director (Western Region) Rishi Raj Singh said.

The builder however lodged a complaint with the CBI, which laid a trap and caught Sumitra red-handed while accepting the bribe.

According to the investigating agency, Anjali was also involved in the crime and was to get a share of the bribe amount.

"Searches were conducted at Anjali's residence and cash worth Rs6 lakh was recovered. She also has three plots each in Nagpur and Panvel," CBI DIG Sonali Mishra said.
