If klutzy is the best way to define your strokes on a graphics painting programme on your PC or laptop, Rahul Dominic has the magic wand to make them look aesthetically-pleasing.

The 15-year-old student of National Public School in Bangalore has caught the imagination of Microsoft with his application (app), the Duco Paint, for its Windows 8 platform.

What sets Duco Paint apart from other similar apps? The understanding that you don’t need to be an artist to make art.
“Duco Paint has 25 different types of paint brushes, including the regular paint brush. With the 24 unique styles, you can create something aesthetically beautiful. I developed it because I’m am not very artistic either,” explains Dominic, who developed an interest in coding thanks to his father and learnt C-programming at 10.

The Class IX student, a familiar face at app fests and coding events, caught Microsoft’s eye during the world’s largest app fest for Windows 8 on September 21-22, 2012, in Bangalore. The 18-hour-long coding event saw developers designing and testing applications, with Microsoft on-site experts at hand to spot talent whose applications could eventually land up in Windows stores.

The experts were so impressed with Dominic’s app that they wanted to help him modify it for commercial use. Duco Paint is expected to hit Windows stores by March-end. In the first month of its release, the app will be offered free.
Harish Vaidyanathan, director of technical evangelism, Microsoft, says Dominic was almost turned away from the app fest due to technicalities concerning age, but the experts’ interest in him grew after they saw his contributions to the app store.
