After the Delhi Metro site mishaps, the “accident-prone” national capital witnessed another mishap at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which was being spruced up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, on Thursday.

A worker died at the stadium minutes after a cement mixer fell on him. Two other workers present at the site escaped with minor injuries. “Lax safety measures at the construction site could be the primary reason,” police said.

Thursday’s incident raises questions about the safety norms in place at the Commonwealth construction projects. Sunil, the victim, was working in the basement of a building at the stadium, when suddenly the cement mixer lost balance and fell on him.
“Sunil was crushed to death after the cement mixer, in which cement was being mixed for a pillar nearby, fell on him. The sand under the mixer shifted, which caused the mixer to lose its balance and fall on him. The other two workers, Nepal and Muktilal, escaped with minor injuries,” police said.

Sunil was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma centre where he was declared brought dead.
An FIR has been launched against the driver of the cement mixer. “We have filed an FIR against the driver and investigations are on,” police said.

According to PTI, this is the fourth mishap in the past 12 days at a construction site in the national capital, which has claimed seven lives and left 21 injured. The three other mishaps took place in Delhi Metro sites.

On July 12, six persons were killed and 15 injured when an under-construction bridge collapsed in south Delhi’s Zamrudpur. The next day, four cranes snapped during debris clearance operations at the same site, injuring six persons, PTI reported.
