It was the first ever cab ride for 21 year old Ishwari Singh when she boarded the Ola cab on October 2 and soon it turned out to be the ride of her life as she delivered a baby boy in the cab when she was on the way to a hospital. Both the mother and the child are safe and they got the discharge from the hospital on Thursday.

As a goodwill gesture, Ola, the cab aggregator sent the same cab and the driver to drop the mother and the child back home from the hospital on Thursday. Ola also announced free ride for the mother and the baby for the next five years.

The Kondhwa based Vishwakarma family is overjoyed after Ishwari Singh and the child have come back home in healthy condition but on the morning of October 2, it was certainly not a joyride for her and other family members.

Ishwari's husband Ramesh Singh Vishwakarma who works in a private firm told DNA, "We have a car at home in which we would always take Ishwari to hospital for regular check up. However, on October 1, my father had taken the car for his work and I had only a two wheeler at home."

Ramesh had never thought that his wife would be delivering a baby on October 2 as her due date was on October 24. "As all the tests were normal and doctors had given us the due date of October 24, I did not bother to keep my car at home. However, in the wee hours of October 2, she started experiencing labour pain and we decided to take her to hospital in a cab."

Ramesh had enrolled Ishwari's name in Pune municipal corporation run Kamla Nehru hospital which is nearly 12 kilometers away from their house.  After booking the cab on October 2 morning, the cab driver Yashwant Galande picked up Ishwari, her mother in law and brother in law from their house at around 7.20 am while Ramesh was riding the two wheeler ahead of the cab.

"Ishwari and my mother were sitting on the rear seat while my brother had taken the front seat next to the driver. After we traveled nearly four kilometers, I got a call from my brother who told me that my wife had given the birth to a baby boy on the rear seat of the cab," Ramesh said.

It was equally tensed situation for Yashwant Galande, the cab driver. Speaking to DNA, Galande said, "The ride started just like any other ride but soon the woman started crying. Her relative sitting next to her was trying to give her confidence. I was also panicked to see her situation and before I could realise, her relative announced  that she has delivered the baby. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, I took the cab to the hospital without halting anywhere."

While the mother and the child was still on the way to the hospital, Ramesh called up the doctors in the hospital and asked them to be ready. "When we reached the hospital, the doctors were already waiting for outside the hospital building. As soon as we reached the hospital, the doctors detached the umbilical cord inside the cab only and they took the baby and the mother inside the hospital for further treatment," Ramesh added.

After staying in the hospital for three days, Ishwari and her baby got the discharge from the hospital on Thursday. "The original due date of the baby was on October 24 but I am happy that my son is now sharing his birth date with none other than Mahatma Gandhi," Ramesh said.
