After Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), tension prevailed in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) when violent clashes took place between two groups of students in the campus on Saturday after a student was stabbed and thrashed by the rival group.

The Incident took place on Saturday morning when Ashutosh and his friends were attacked by a group of students near the Hindi department. “We were going for semester exams when a group of students wielding country-made pistols, knife, iron rods and hockey sticks surrounded us and started beating us. They stabbed me in the stomach and hit me with the butt of pistol on my head and neck,” said Ashutosh.

On hearing shrieks of Ashutosh and his friends, many students from the hostel came out and chased the assailants. It was free for all for about half an hour with students from both sides pelting stones, some of them from the roof of the hostels creating panic among other students.

A few students, including girls also sustained injuries in the stone-pelting. They were later taken to safer places by the guards posted in the campus. The university administration immediately called the police which saved the situation taking an ugly turn.

Examinations were, however, conducted as scheduled in both the shifts. Heavy police force has been deployed in the campus and outside to check any fall-out of the clashes.

An FIR has been lodged against eight named students by Ashutosh and his friends at the Lanka Police Station. Initially, Ashutosh had told the police that he did not identify assailants since they had wrapped their faces with ‘gumchchas’ but later he named FIR against eight persons.

The Lanka police said that personal rivalry eve-teasing were stated to be reason behind the attack and clashes in the campus. “We have registered a case and investigations are on. Teams have been formed to identify and arrest assailants. We have also sought CCTV footage from the administration to identify those who attacked them” said a senior police official.
