Controversial BJP MLA Sangeet Som has said that he has been threatened on phone by the much-dreaded terrorist group Islamic State (IS). Som is facing criminal charges for his alleged role in the Muzaffarnagar riots of August-September 2013.

He told reporters in Meerut that the man who had called him claimed to be a member of the militant group IS. Som already has an elaborate 'Z' category security cover.

"I received a call on my private number around 9.30am today (Saturday) from an unidentified man who claimed that I would be killed soon," Som said. "The man said that his men were on the operation to eliminate me had already reached India," he added. The call was made from Chile in South America. He lodged a formal police complaint soon afterwards.

"When I asked the person on the phone to stay in his limits, he told me that he is a member of the IS and that they don't kill uninformed.

"The person was talking in Hindi. During the call, the phone even got disconnected once, but he called again within two minutes," Som said.

After receiving the threat call, the BJP MLA immediately intimated security agencies and registered a written complaint with the area's inspector general of police. He is also reported to have informed Union home minister Rajnath Singh about the threat.

"I have also informed senior leaders of the party about the call," he added.

Som said he had recieved such threats in the past and had also been attacked once, "but I am not afraid of such incidents".

Earlier this year, Som was accorded 'Z' category security by the Centre after intelligence inputs that the BJP MLA from Sardhana could be targeted by extremist elements.

Apart from his alleged involvement in the 2013 riots, Som was in the thick of controversy on being felicitated by senior BJP leaders at a rally in Agra during the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election just before Narendra Modi arrived on the dais.
