If single women are found using mobile phones, they will be slapped with a Rs 2000 fine.

A village in Gujarat has banned single women from using mobile phones!

Suraj village in Mehsana district of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Gujarat, has reportedly passed a resolution saying mobile phones are banned for teenage girls and young women. The resolution was passed in early February. 

Village head Devshi Vankar told AFP that like liquors, use of mobile phones by unmarried women is also a nuisance to the society. However, the single women in their are allowed to use their relatives' phones. 

Vankar also added that a similar ban is expected to be announced for school boys soon. 

Vankar claims that phones were distracting unmarried women from their studies and household chores in their village. If any single woman is found owning or speaking on aa phone, she will face a fine of Rs 2,000, Vankar said. He added that informers for tip-offs will be offered Rs 200.

Recently, a panchayat in an Aligarh village also had announced a complete ban on the use of mobile phones by girls younger than 18, blaming the devices for "corrupting" them. The families of violators will be punished by having to sweep village roads. The decision was announced by the panchayat of Basauli village in the district.
