Asserting that there has never been a close call in the history of Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Dayanidhi Maran on Thursday alleged that the ruling AIADMK spent crores of money to emerge victorious in the assembly polls. Maran, who is the grandnephew DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, said the exit polls did predict a victory for his party.

"Since all the exit polls predicted that the DMK is going to win, this forced the ruling government to spend more money. In fact, you have seen that 570 crores were caught and without any documents. I have never heard that a bank transfers 570 crores tree trucks without any security personnel and without any proper documents," he added. The DMK leader further said it is a failure on part of the Election Commission to stop or prevent the distribution of money.

"Never has in the history of Tamil Nadu there has been a close call. It was always a clear mandate. The people's mandate is for DMK but because the dirty money played the game the DMK was not able to serve the people," he added.

Meanwhile, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa, who became the first person after legendary M.G. Ramachandran, better known as MGR, to be elected to two continuous terms, thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for reposing their faith in her and said that she is indebted to them forever.

Defying the exit poll prediction, the AIADMK has won 23 seats and is leading in 109. The DMK has won 20 seats and is leading in 69.
