Hearing on bail plea of Maulana Ejaz Arshad Qasmi, who was arrested last month for slapping a woman on a live TV debate on Zee Hindustan, will be heard by a local court in Greater Noida tomorrow.

Qasmi had assaulted Farah Faiz, an advocate fighting against the practice of triple talaq, on live TV during a debate on July 17. He was arrested on the same day from the Zee Media’s office after a complaint by the media house.

Qasmi is a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

His application for bail was rejected by the CJM court. He then moved to Surajpur session court but hearing on his plea could not take place due to a strike by lawyers. His application for the bail is likely to be heard by the court tomorrow.

It is worth mentioning that the police has slapped a case against Qasmi under six sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), two of which were included after a statement by the victim.

Qasmi has moved three bail applications, two of which he filed after police slapped two additional section - 354 and 153B of the IPC - following Faiz's statement. Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) was added as the cleric had abused the victim, Investigating Officer Arun Verma said.

Verma had submitted a video of the assault in the CJM court after which Qasmi's bail application was rejected. He later moved to the sessions court.

Qasmi, a regular on TV debates, had assaulted Farah Faiz during a debate on “talaq-e-bidat (triple talaq). Faiz had said in the debate that triple talaq is not a form of divorce recognised in Quran. This triggered a war of words between her and Maulana Qasmi which resulted in the physical scuffle.

Faiz, who runs an NGO Muslim Women’s Quest for Equality in Uttar Pradesh, is also national president (honorary) of the RSS-associated Rashtrawadi Muslim Mahila Sangh.

Qasmi was arrested soon after the show on Zee Media's complaint and Faiz also filed an FIR with the police. He was later produced before a court in Greater Noida's Surajpur which had sent him to jail.
