Severe heat wave prevailed in the entire country on Saturday claiming several lives in Telangana and Odisha, The temperature rose to 45.8  degree  C in Jamshedpur.

Telangana

Heat wave in Telangana has so far claimed 49 lives and there seems no respite from soaring mercury as the hot weather is likely to prevail at few places in the state for at least two days, a Disaster Management department official said on Saturday.

Mahabubnagar district topped the chart of heat-related deaths at 39.

Temperature has been hovering above 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state since last fortnight prompting the government to issue a heat wave alert in all districts.

The government had announced Rs 50,000 as ex-gratia to the kin of those who died due to sun stroke.

Odisha

Odisha on Saturday recorded two more sunstroke deaths while Titlagarh, in the western part of the state, recorded 48 degree Celsius, making it the hottest place in the country.

The state government on Saturday confirmed two more sunstroke deaths taking the official death toll due to heat-related incidents to four.

Of the four sunstroke deaths, three were reported from Angul district and one from Bolangir, a SRC official said.

Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur recorded a high of 45.8 degree C, six degrees above normal, while several districts in Jharkhand experienced heat wave conditions.

West Bengal

Severe heat wave prevailed in the western districts of West Bengal on Saturday with Bankura recording the maximum at 47 degree Celsius and the Met office not predicting any rainfall in the next 48 hours.

Kolkata recorded a maximum of 38.5 degrees C while neighbouring Dumdum saw temperature rise to 40.6 degrees C, the Met office said.

"The situation is absolutely not favourable. There is no forecast of any rains in the region in the next 48 hours. The severe heat wave is very likely to continue in Bankura, Birbhum and Burdwan districts. Heat wave is likely to continue in West Midnapur, Nadia, Murshidabad, Howrah and Purulia districts," Regional Meteorological Centre Director G C Debnath told PTI.

It will be sultry weather in the city with the maximum and minimum temperature likely around 39 degrees C and 28 degrees C respectively, he added.

Instructions to people

In view of prevailing heat wave conditions in the country, the Odisha government advised its citizens to stay indoors between 11 am and 3 pm. 

"The temperatures are likely to remain high. As per the met department, there are no signs of any improvement in the coming days. Keeping this in view, we have to stay completely prepared. In line with the advisory issued by the Met department, we also recommend people should not show adventurism and should stay indoors, especially between 11 AM and 3 PM," Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Mohapatra told reporters.

The state government has directed closure of all schools till April 26, restricted engagement of workers in manual jobs from 11 am to 3 pm and cancelled leave of employees engaged in the supply of drinking water.
