A lesson on India's international athlete Kavita Raut, popularly known as 'Sawarpada Express', is going to be included in the Marathi textbook for Standard 4 from the new academic year of 2015-16. The lesson is picked up from Santosh Sable's book 'Yashogatha', which was published last year by Yashwantrao Chavan Open University (YCMOU). The athlete is also doing her Bachelor of Arts from YCMOU.

Balbharati, the Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, took this decision to encourage and inspire 50 lakh students in the state as the lesson elaborates the pains and struggles that Raut passed through on her way to success in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

Vice chancellor of YCMOU Dr Manikrao Salunkhe said, "While remaining in the service of the university, Santosh Sable did a commendable job by adopting a constructive attitude and highlighting the story of our student Kavita Raut, who braved several adversities to be where she is today. It is a matter of pride for the university."

Asked what prompted him to write about the athlete in Yashogatha, Sable said, "I wrote about Raut so that others too will feel motivated to follow her. Owing to the opportunity given by the university, Yashogatha (success story) was produced. I am really very happy to know that a lesson on Raut is being included and that it would be taught throughout Maharashtra."

Happy to know that a lesson on her struggles and achievements will be taught in schools, Raut says, "There are many talented sports-persons in Maharashtra's rural, tribal and urban areas. If they are spotted and given proper training and guidance, the country will get good athletes. I am happy to learn about the inclusion of a lesson on me in the Balbharati textbook. Girls should turn to sports while studying. For this, YCMOU is the best place."
