Mumbai Police's Crime Branch has arrested a man who had been calling up a developer to demand Rs 10 crore. The accused, identified as Dharmendra Raghu Khandagle, is a real estate agent known to the developer.

On the call, the accused claimed to be a gangster but turned out to be a real estate agent after the voice samples of the recorded calls were analysed.

According to Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Ashutosh Dumbare, a Santacruz (E) based developer had done an agreement in 2010 with a person, who had 2600-square foot property in the area, to develop the said property. Later, due to some dispute between the builder and the land-owner, after which the development work came to a halt.

"In December 2017, the developer started receiving calls from an unknown international number. The caller identified himself as a gangster. The caller directed the victim to give Rs 10 crore to the other party and settle the dispute. The victim received several such threatening calls till February 2018. The caller also threatened to kill the developer and his family if the orders were not followed," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Detection, Nisar Tamboli.

The victim approached Vakola Police after which case of extortion was registered against an unknown person in the matter. The case was then transferred to Unit VIII of Crime Branch for further probe.

"We closely analysed the recorded extortion calls and soon it got confirmed that the voice of the caller was different from the voice of the gangster whose name was used to issue the threat. We then got details of all the persons who were associated with the developer in the said project. We then zeroed in on a real estate agent who was mediating between the builder and the other party. Khandagle, 52, was apprehended on Friday after which admitted having made those extortion calls to the victim. We are probing if more persons are involved in the case," said DCP Tamboli.
