Delhi's chilly weather got the kick of political warmth on Monday with the Election Commission announcing February 7 as the day of polling for deciding the next government in the national capital.

The verdict of the 1.3 crore Delhi voters will be announced on February 10. Filing of nominations will begin on Wednesday, while the last date for filing the nomination is January 21.

Taking place in less than two months after keenly contested Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand assembly polls, Delhi elections have brought the focus on prime minister Narendra Modi again who began the campaign on Saturday by indirectly launching an attack on Aam Aadmi Party's mascot leader Arvind Kejriwal.

Many political observers believe that the fight for Delhi's throne is going to be an acid test for Modi's popularity that has been continuously on the upswing since Lok Sabha results.

Delhi's election result are also expected to impact and set a broad the trend for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar that are due late this year and West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu that are due in the summer of next year.

"We expect a heated political campaign in Delhi," said chief election commissioner V S Sampath, enumerating the schedule of Delhi assembly elections the elections.

The announcement brings the Model Code of Conduct into effect immediately in the Capital.

Delhi headed for a mid-term Assembly election after all the major political parties — the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party expressed their inability to form a government prompting lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung to recommend dissolving the Assembly and calling for fresh elections on November 4 last year.

AAP had formed government on December 28, 2013 with outside support from Congress after BJP, the single largest party refused to form the government citing lack of numbers.

The assembly was dissolved the next day and President's Rule was imposed on February 17 after AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal resigned as the chief minister after running the government for 49 days.
