Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will have his hands full, following the riots that have taken place in Panchkula. At least 30 people had been killed in the riots that ensued after Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted by a CBI court for rape earlier on Friday.

Following the order, his supporters burnt buses, set fire to office complexes and even took their rioting to North east Delhi. Panchkula railway station had also been torched during the riots.

While it’s been a tough time for Khattar to restore law and order in the area, it isn’t the first time that the Haryana CM has had mass protests during his tenure. There have been three previous incidents and this one makes it the fourth since 2014 - the year he assumed office

Jat Stir in Haryana, 2016

As many as 30 people were killed and property worth crores of rupees was damaged at many places in Haryana during last year's Jat stir which had turned violent. Rohtak and some of its neighbouring districts, including Sonipat and Jhajjar, were the worst hit by the violence that rocked the state two years ago after the community demanded reservation.

Following the deaths, the Haryana Government a year later released a compensation of Rs 65.38 crore, including interim and final payments, to those people whose properties were damaged in the recent Jat quota stir in the state.

Private and government insurance companies have already made payments over Rs 12 crore to these people whose insured properties were damaged, an official spokesperson said here.

Arrest of religious leader Rampal, 2014

Self-styled Haryana godman Rampal, who rose from being a government officer to head a vague divinity cult in Hissar, was arrested in a contempt case. He was also booked for murder.  Bodies of four women, including that of a 70-year-old, were also handed over to the police by the ashram staff.  Several persons were injured as clashes erupted with police lobbing teargas shells and using batons to disperse his supporters who allegedly fired back. The violence has erupted at a time when the Haryana government is racing against time to meet the Friday deadline set by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for producing Rampal in a contempt case.

Incidentally, while Rampal was accused of murder, the non-bailable warrant was issued as he had evaded appearing before court 42 times.

The village has a population of about 10,000 of which about 550 are Muslim.
