Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah touched a raw nerve on Monday by claiming that accession of the state with India was only on three subjects, which have been gradually eroded.

“Those who repeatedly claim that Jammu and Kashmir is atoot ang (integral part) of India forget that the accession was only on three subjects —  communication & currency,  defence and  foreign affairs — which have been gradually eroded [by New Delhi],” Omar said in the assembly while replying to the discussion on the motion on grants for the departments under his control.

Omar said the status of the political issue of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be changed by repeating the word ‘atoot ang’ time and again. He said, “Those who repeatedly talk  about Kashmir being integral part of India are responding to who? Has any member of the House questioned it?”

Omar further said, “Nobody has challenged the accession. But to change the scenario you have to win the hearts of the people of J&K. I have always said Kashmir will be true part of India when you can win the hearts of the people and care for their hopes and aspirations. If you will reject them, there will be alienation. Every Kashmiri is not Pakistani,” Omar said.

Questioning the hanging of Afzal Guru, Omar said had he possessed the power of signing on the death warrant he would have acted in his own way. “If you think that Kashmir civil society had no effect of Afzal’s hanging, you are wrong. They are not so naive. They seek reply from me over the different treatment meted out to Veerappan gang members, killers of Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and the killers former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. I have no answer but some day we all have to give them reply,” he said.

Seemingly buoyed by the home ministry’s decision for NIA probe into Liyaqat Shah arrest case, Omar lampooned the Delhi police saying no terrorist would come to attack the national capital with his wife. He asked: “If someone is coming to attack shopping mall in Delhi, would he coming with his wife?”
