Days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, a former Indian Navy officer was on Thursday arrested in Balochistan for alleged spying and "subversive" activities.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), however, said that the person, identified as Kul Yadav Bhushan, "has no link with the government since his premature retirement from Indian Navy. We have sought consular access to him."

"India has no interest in interfering in the internal matters of any country and firmly believes that a stable and peaceful Pakistan is in the interest of all in the region," MEA spokesperson Vikash Swarup said.

The Pakistan foreign office said in a statement on Friday: "The Indian high commissioner (in Islamabad) Gautam Bambawale was summoned by the foreign secretary today and through a demarche conveyed our protest and deep concern on the illegal entry into Pakistan by a RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) officer and his involvement in subversive activities in Balochistan and Karachi."

RAW is India's external intelligence agency.

Swarup also said that the matter was raised on Friday by Pakistan's foreign secretary with the Indian high commissioner in Islamabad.

The Indian Navy, meanwhile, denied any response when asked for one by dna.

Pakistan, on the other hand alleged that Bhushan, a commander-rank officer of the Indian Navy was a spy of RAW.

He has been taken to Islamabad for interrogation. According to reports in Pakistani media, Bhushan was arrested during a raid in Balochistan province even as the exact location of the arrest was not known yet.

Balochistan home minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti told agencies that the arrest "proved Indian involvement in Balochistan". Pakistan has long been accusing India of stoking unrest in the region.
